Re: SS United States
Yep, she sure was a looker, MA. Ships didn't start to get really ugly until the 1960s. United States can definitely be considered one of the last of the great Ladies who once proudly sailed the seas.

Re: SS United States
She resembles the Queen Mary more than anything, and I would agree with the above statements as well. I think her superstructure is identical to past design, not to mention multipule funnels and a sufficently sized stern, bow (fortcastle) and enough promenade to actually walk! The hull isn't nearly as sleek as the Titanic's was, but I'll credit the SS United States with some style back when it still existed on vessels.

Re: SS United States
I think that the Disney Cruise Fleet of ships are also designed after the United States, aren't they? On DCF, one of the funnels are fake, and is used as a restaurant.

Re: SS United States
Really? A false funnel like Titanic! Well aboard Titanic the White Star Line used the dummy to store deck chairs, but as a resturaunt is very creative. I wonder if they used the top to place a dome over the whole thing?! Vertical, high celings are all the hype these days.

Take a look down at the A La Carte Restaurant>Disney Cruise Ships - It's all Mickey Mouse! thread. Looking at the picture of the Disney sisters, you'll see two funnels. The fore-funnel(s) are, I believe--where the restaurant(s) were built.

Re: SS United States
Yeah, United States DOES sort of resemble QM. The bow of United States is more of a clipper-type bow whereas QM's bow is a straighter bow like that of Titanic, but in the main the resemblence between these two ships is pretty close.

Lights, take a looksee at the Disney Cruise Ships - It's all Mickey Mouse! opening thread. There, you will see a pair of two sister ships from this line. Don't you also see that they also kind of resemble the SS United States? :hey:

Re: SS United States
The above liner might've been the standin for that episode of the I Love Lucy show, for which the Ricardos and Mertzes sailed on.
It aired only just this afternoon, on channel 37, that comes out of Phoenix, AZ. Please do check out my TSOLD>First Class Lounge>I Love Lucy thread, for further explanation...

Re: SS United States
Yeah, the SS United States would work really well in that context, especially since she was put into service in the 1950s. That would have made her a pretty classy ship to be travelling on.
Also my kudos to all the good folks who are maintaining her for us.
