RMS Roraima

On Thursday, May 8th 1902, Mount Pelée erupted releasing a great death cloud of hot ash that consumed the RMS Roraima, a luxgury liner docked nearby. Her masts and funnels were "Sheared" clean off, without the slightest rigging. As the ship was lit on fire by the dark cloud, passengers and crew alike were severly burnt. Her officer, Ellery Scott reported that a "big woman, despite her burns and scaldskept singing hymns." She asked for water, and every time she got a drink she seemed to revive. The Last song she sang was Nearer My God to Thee before dying where she sat. This peice was later attributed to the Titanic's band as the final hymn played as the ship slowly slipped beneth the sea. whether or not Nearer my God to Thee or Songue De Autum were the last songs aboard Titanic are debateable, but I do remember readin an article that stated Wallace Heartly said he would play Nearer My God to Thee as a final song if he was aboard a sinking ship.

Information for this thread was provided by Dr. Charles Pellegrino's "Unearthing Atlantis" book about the Lost City of Threa. Pages 70 - 75 in Chapter "A Killing Wind."

I also should mention the cliché "It's not over until the fat lady sings" is drawn from this story.

Here is an amazon link to Unearthing Atlantis.

Re: RMS Roraima

Interesting link and thanks for posting, Mr Titanic!

I remember reading about this in several books on Mt Pelee and St. Pierre. Another interesting tidbit showed up a while back on one of my geology boards...apparently as in the case of the RMS Roraima, people are not safe from a pyroclastic flow even at sea...the one flow from Vesuvius in 79 AD actually completely crossed the Bay of Naples, eventually killing Pliny the Elder amongst others.

Re: RMS Roraima

Very true. The Theran death cloud crossed the entire Mediterranean Sea and effected Egypt and even Turkey. It's common sense to take refuge in water, although it doesn't do one too much good. That really is an interesting fact Lights. This is especially considering that the hot ash is ejected into the atmosphere and is unlike flowing lava on the ground.

On the Roraima the passengers began collecting the ash in trays to take as mementos. The ship currently lies rusting in the St. Pierre harbor.

Re: RMS Roraima

No kidding, fifty people were on board and only fifteen survived the explosion. One can read more about the wreck of the Roraima here.

The Thera eruption was terrible. It released so much energy that it had an incredible effect on thoe course of history and even biblical stories. It is even thought of as one of the reasons the Minoans of Thera and Crete fell, and were noted to be Atlantis in Plato's story. I recommend Unearthing Atlantis very much.

I will be certain to check it out as Atlantis is another of my interests. I believe that Atlantis (or at least a fairly sophisticated civilisation) existed before what we commonly call "written history"...not sure exactly where it was but am willing to investigate/weigh all theories on the subject. Thanks for the tip, Mr Titanic! emoticon

For anyone who is interested in the disaster which befell the City of St, Pierre and RMS
Roraima, here is a link:

The source mentioned Hurricane force winds with scroching heat! That is deadly, no wonder nearly nothing has a chance. That is very interesting, thank you for the links Lights. emoticon

You are more than welcome, Mr Titanic. Anything caught in a pyroclastic flow sure does end up emoticon --just very little chance of making it...the two people who survived from St. Pierre were VERY fortunate!
