posticon RMS Lusitania

The Discovery Channel, the other night which was Mothers' Day eve, aired the Sinking of the Lusitania: Terror At Sea movie.

It was a very good film, if I say so myself. It showed that a German U-Boat/submarine, was the true culprit behind Lusitania's sinking.

I also enjoyed seeing the exterior shots of the London Inquiry courthouse; because it was as if I was seeing it through the eyes of Will & Ada as they climbed its steps, for the Olympic-Hawke Inquiry.

Re: RMS Lusitania

Discovery Channel has some great specials on it, doesn't it, MA? I find the subject of Lusitania easily as interesting as that of our ship.

Although nothing can mitigate the actions of Schweigert and the crew of U-20, in all fairness, passengers planning to cross the Atlantic were warned by ads placed in the shipping columns of New York newspapers by the German Embassy. As has been true in other cases, passengers chose to ignore the warning. Of course, it did not help that Cunard ships, amongst others were used to transport war materiel (espeditions to the wreck have turned up cartriges and other wartime "contraband". Sad that governments and shipping lines chose to put passengers in harm's way, though as I have said above, noting can mitigate the actions of Schweigert and his crew--he knew exactly what he was torpedoing as a member of his crew positively identified the ship as Lusitania (in an interesting aside, one of the crewmen refused to fire on a ship with women and children aboard and was later court-martialed as a result--unfortunately I do not have the results of that court-martial. Also, it is my understanding that Schweigert's action was not looked upon well by the Kaiser, though that was likely a result of the generally negative opinion of the rest of the world after the sinking).
