Re: 1st Officer William McMaster Murdoch

I found this link over on the ET forum about Will...

Murdoch - The Man, the Mystery

From what I understand, Daniel Parks covers all the bases.

Thank you, Lightsy. It is a terrific site that's packed loads of pertinent information on Will.

I'm after Mr Titanic to open up that MUCH needed troublesome Adobe Acrobat hidden story in NEW Materials>Suicide Accounts Graph dialogue box, that's seen there. That way, we all can read it here on this thread.

I've visted that site before as well MA, it is indeed an excellent website. I believe that is where I found the picture of Murdoch from the Medic. Regardless here is an excellent site regarding the suicide. At the left are testimonies and other sources of information that analyze the possible suicide of one of the officers. If an officer did take his life that night, I would honestly think it was Murdoch. In the "Final Analsis" section of the site, Murdoch has the greatest modivation to carry out such a thought, in my opinion.

Quote:

Shots in the Dark Wrote:

Murdoch was the man directly in charge of the ship in the hours leading up to the collision with the iceberg. As such, he was responsible for the ship and all its passengers during that time. His career at sea was effectively over, if he survived the disaster.

If ‘the’ iceberg was not the first to be spotted that night, as brought out in George Behe’s Titanic: Safety, Speed and Sacrifice, then Murdoch was also responsible for not slowing down, in direct violation of the posted orders from the White Star Line, that “Time must be sacrificed or any other temporary inconvenience suffered, rather than the lightest risk should be incurred.” He also did not follow Captain Smith’s final orders (passed on from Lightoller), to "If in the slightest degree doubtful, let me know."

Re: 1st Officer William McMaster Murdoch

Wow! That is heavy, Mr Titanic--if Murdoch didn't slow down in the face of previous warnings, it becomes more likely that he did take his own life...probably as a way of "atoning" for said ignoring of warnings. I do know that Geo. Behe mentioned that on Capathia, there was gossip to that effect, probably originating with Fleet and/or Lee (though how they would have known that Murdoch committed suicide is beyond me as they went away in Boats 6 and I believe in the case of Lee, Boat 11, both of them leaving before the purported suicide).

I honestly believe that Murdoch had probably already decided that he was not going to survive...whether he took his own life in an attempt to "atone" or to avoid dying in that ice-cold water, I think it is understandable.
This is why the suicide has never particularly upset me...I wasn't in his shoes and I will not make a judgement call on it. Suicide springs from complicated motives and well, were I in his place, i might have done the same.

Thank you for Shots in the Dark site, Mr Titanic. I certainly enjoyed, but was saddened...reading the different accounts of Titanic's crew and passengers whom may have indeed witnessed Will's suicide.

Thanks to first Will via Dochy, and then Lightsy...I know the truth.

This Biblical text pretty well describes Will's "final" actions during the wee hours of the morning of April 15th, 1912...

(John 15:13) KJV
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

On a much lighter note, while over on ET last night...I loved reading more about Will when he was a wee lad (before his teenage years' famous photo of him posing for a photograph with his siser, Agnes).

For that matter, I also loved reading more of the Murdoch history; especially about Captain Samuel's stopovers in Oakland (his Oakland Cottage home is named for this seaside town), California...during his many crossings.

And most of all...about wee Will's sweet precious childhood. Because I emoticon him so much, those momentoes are pretty special to me.

(Now, I wish we had a "star" smilie), for I say a hardy "Amen!" to Captain Hayes' above assessment, Lightsy!!! emoticon emoticon

Will also sort of got his wish...wish to be buried at sea, to boot.
