I think that food sounds like it would be good. I love chateau potatoes, and Lamb with Mint sauce sounds interesting. I could never survive as a vegetarian. However, I do remember Cal in the 1997 Cameron Titanic movie, ordering the Lamb with "very little mint sauce" in the Verandah Café.
As vegetarian speaking--if Ida & Isador Straus, both whom are Jewish (eat kosher meals), can survive WSL's menus...surely you too, can do same, Mr. Titanic. :heyy:

Re: Edwardian Cuisine
I was so intigued by the seeming absence of kosha food on Titanic that I carried out some brief research of my own. I will look into it in more detail but here are my initial findings and thoughts.
Firstly I can find no refference as yet regarding the preparation of kosha foods on Titanic. When you consider the high likelyhood of many of her passengers being Jewish I was very surprised at this. So I thought about what was available and it came to me that maybe there was a large enough selection of foods available so as to make a specific kosha menu unnecessary. At the same time I recalled the great many Jewish colleagues I had lunch and dinner with for a number of years and they always seemed to eat the same things as I did, with maybe minor exceptions, from a non-kosha menu.
Sorry if all this seems like a ramble but it's something that I had not thought of before and it got me wondering. :book:

That's quite all right, GF. We're totally thrilled to have you share your own input with us, as well as learning more about how Titanic's Jewish passengers may have chosen their meals from WSL's non-kosher menus. For that is something we vegetarians have always wondered about. :heyy:

Re: Edwardian Cuisine
I have just read that there were enough Jews onboard for a special cook to be employed. He was called Charles Kennel.
I have also found that there was a section of the galley (or pantry) which was soley for the preparing and cooking of kosher foods, plus i read on the bottom of a 3rd class menu "Kosher Meat Supplied and Cooked for Jewish Passengers as desired"
so I seem to have solved this little mystery.
The Foxes, the reason your Jewish friends ate the same food is because they are more lenient. Many Jews will eat meat and vegetables aslong etc when not at home because unless they are dining at a Jewish restaurant, they would have to go without if they kept to the Jewish dietry laws. even traditional Jewish foods can be non kosher if prepared in the wrong way, and any food can be kosher aslong as it IS prepared in the correct way according to Jewsih law.
thats probably more than you needed to know, but anyway

Re: Edwardian Cuisine
Good work as usual Bessie The idea of kosher (correct spelling this time lol) food on Titanic had not entered my head before and it set me wondering.
Plus to go with what you say, I will quote one of my Jewish colleagues "as far as I am concerned this gammon is chicken, and wether it is or not is between me and God". That was in response to me asking why she was eating (politlely of course lol) gammon.

Shaved ice!?! I've never heard of that before. To me, ice is ice, no matter how you put it. Now, as for the rest of that recipe...it sounds delicious!!!

Re: Edwardian Cuisine
Nice going bess! I was very curious to know if the Titanic did supply required dishes for the Jewish community aboard. And yes we do have shaved ice, we just call them slushies though, and I love them, my favorite is the cherry coke flavored ones (primarily because I love cherry coke).
