A Little, Erm, Alternative TITANIC History

I wasn't sure where to put this so i put it here in AGS.

In his Last Log of the TITANIC, author Captain David Brown sets forth the theory that, contrary to accepted Titanic history, Murdoch didn't put the engines "full-astern" as reported by Fourth Officer Boxhall. What Captain Brown believes happened is that Murdoch actually stopped Titanic's engines instead of reversing them.

This theory makes a great deal of sense to me. As a ship's officer, Murdoch would have known that attempting a so-called "crash stop" would have put the reciprocating engines at risk of severe injury--just for a start, shafts could have been snapped, which was why this manoevre was saved only for the direst of emergncies.

Also, had a "crash stop" been executed, a powerful jolt would have been immediately felt throughout the ship. No survivor accounts mention such a jerk. They all tend to mention a shuddering but no jolt.

Captain Brown also believes that Titanic grounded on an ice reef protruding out from the iceburg, resulting in damage to the double bottom. Many people pooh-ooh the idea, but I think it makes sense, too: several surviving stokers mentioned water coming up from below instead of just through the side of the ship. The only way that could have happened would have been if the double bottom had been breached.
,
So what do you think? Was a "crash stop" executed? Did Titanic ground on said ice reef or is Brown full of it?

I mustn't read more! I just got my copy of Last Log yesterday. I'll be reading it soon now that I have completed Pellegrino's "Unearthing Atlantis." I read some of your post up to the stopping of the engines and not reversing them. I've heard of a similar theory. I am positive the order may have been given, just not carried out. Regardless from what I've read it sounds interesting and valid. Thank you for posting it.

Alright, you have two options. I can leave your thread in the Aft Grand Staircase because it is a private discussion forum, or if you'd like I can move it to the appropriate forum which is the Dining Saloon. Typically all Titanic related material, that is theories, wreck discoveries, technical questions and all that belong in the Dining Saloon. Because the AGS is private discussion I can move it if you'd like to make your thread public.

Hi Mr Titanic,

I would like this posted up in the Dining Saloon, please.

I think you will find Capt. Brown's theories quite interesting and persuasive...I know I do.
