posticon Titanic Voyage Outline

This thread is dedicated to the unforgettable voyage and disaster that shook the foundation of the Edwardian Era. The voyage of the liner R.M.S. Titanic, the first ship lost in forty years, while mankind developed a sense of pride and triumph over nature, until nature itself finally pushed back. For all those who perished the night the "Unsinkable" ship sank, to all those whose lives were significantly altered the moment fate determined their survival. Titanic, inevitably is a story of people, divided by steel decking and the opinion of their day into classes, and finally put to through the one vent that would show that humans - regardless of possessions or title, will always be human. This is in brief, her story.

* Gross Tonnage: 46,239 Tons (66,000 Tons Displacement)

April 10th 1912 - The Voyage Begins

7:00 AM: Titanic waits quietly in Southampton Harbor.

7:30 AM: Captain Edward J. Smith, who will command the ship for her maiden voyage, and then retire upon return, boards the new R.M.S. Titanic.

8.00 AM: Entire crew mustered, followed by brief lifeboat drill using only two starboard boats, No's 11 and 15. Mail is taken aboard.

9:30 - 11:00 AM: Second and Third (Steerage) class passengers begin and finish boarding the Titanic.

11:30 AM: First Class Passengers begin boarding the liner.

12:00 Noon: The Titanic sets sail for Cherbourg, Queenstown and then New York City. *

* Titanic's voyage is then delayed. While passing by, the surge from Titanic's two 23 foot wide and center 16 foot wide propeller system and large bulk movine through the water creates a large wake and snaps the moorings of the liner New York, tied next to the Oceanic. The small ship's stern veered towards the Titanic's side, however quick thought and action by Captain Smith and those at dock pull the New York aside to allow the Titanic to depart. However, the event delays departure time by at least one hour.

6:30 PM: The Titanic arrives in Cherbourg, France and about 300 passengers are ferried onto the sip in addition to those who boarded in Southampton, England.

8:10 PM: The Titanic heads for Queenstown (Cobh) , Ireland.

April 11th 1912

Captain Smith takes Titanic through a few additional practice turns en route to Queenstown to test her maneuverability. Incidents such as the New York reaction and the previous H.M.S. Hawke collision with Titanic's older sister Olympic reveal difficulty in controlling ships on such a large and new scale.

11:30 AM: Titanic arrives and sails near Queenstown harbor, about two miles from land due to rocky coastline preventing a ship of Titanic's size from sailing near. Seven second-class and one hundred and thirteen third-class passengers board the ship, carried in by tenders with 1385 bags of mail. Seven passengers disembark.

1:30 PM: Titanic departs on her first Trans-Atlantic crossing for New York. The estimated total number of passengers on board is 2227.
