posticon 2005 Cameron Expedition

As we are aware James Cameron is currently on his final expedition down to the RMS Titanic (Along with Dr. Charles Pellegrino - Don Lynch and Ken Marshall) Among others. Areas of the ship are to be explored - the well preserved Turkish Baths and such. It is rather interesting. Archived Information of this extraordinary voyage down to the liner that never completed her own - is present to be read by those who - like myself are quite curious about what is taking effect in the current exploration of the vessel at Encyclopedia Titanica. A link is provided at the bottom of the post where one may track suggestions and statements (some made by those on the expedition such as Parks) on the forum.

However, in this thread I would like some perspectives and expressed curiosity from you enthusiasts. Explain areas that hold much of your interest as far as the expedition is concerned. Voice opinions and or statements in regards to it - lets open a discussion. I personally am quite excited this is taking place - much of my wonder and running imagination might be enforced with the truth of the collected facts. Lots of photographs - lots of documentation - I want it all! The wreck is not here to stay so lets get Titanic for all she currently contains.

Re: 2005 Cameron Expedition

In today's snail mail, I finally got my next week's TV Guide!!!

On page 6, in the Behind the Scenes column, James Cameron is featured...a long with pictures a rare 18-ton sub, held aloft by a crane.

Here's what is says:

Quote:

JAMES CAMERON is going down with the ship. Again, The Oscar-winning director of TITANIC makes his final trip to the wreckage in Last Mysteries of the Titanic (Discovery Channel, Sunday, 9 p.m./ET). Cameron uses two rare 18-ton submarines and 22,000 feet of cable to transmit live images of never-before-seen rooms on the ship, including the Turkish baths and the boiler room, where a fire may have helped cause the ship to sink faster.

Then on page 64, Sunday's prime time grids...TV Guide Special write up:

Quote:

Last Mysteries of the Titanic
Director James Cameron returns to the ship with the latest robotic technology to guide cameras into the deepest recesses of the wreckage. (2:00)

Note this event on your local calendars!!! Okay!?

Titanic - Last Mysteries

Quote:

ames Cameron Makes His Final and Most Comprehensive Expedition to Titanic in Discovery Channel´s Original Special LAST MYSTERIES OF THE TITANIC

SILVER SPRING, Md., Jun. 08 /PRNewswire/ --

SILVER SPRING, Md., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- James Cameron, Oscar-winning writer/director/producer of the blockbuster film Titanic, will make his last trip to the doomed ship this summer as part of an unprecedented television event. LAST MYSTERIES OF THE TITANIC, a poignant farewell to the most spectacular shipwreck in history, will have its world premiere Sunday, July 24th at 9 PM on Discovery Channel.

Utilizing newly developed technology, Cameron and his team present history's best look yet at the ship's interior, including some areas not seen since Titanic's lone voyage in 1912. And since time and the harsh conditions of the ocean floor have taken their toll on the ship, these may be the last images ever gathered of the Titanic before it is surrendered to the deep forever.

The majestic Titanic has been an object of fascination and study for decades, but many tantalizing questions still remain about the ship and its catastrophic sinking. This expedition, Cameron's final and most comprehensive dive yet, attempts to uncover clues and solve some of the Titanic's most haunting mysteries. Throughout LAST MYSTERIES OF THE TITANIC, Cameron's specially designed remotely operated vehicles explore the Turkish Baths (the best-preserved and most opulent remaining space in the ship's interior), Scotland Road (the crew quarters), the first class cabins (which are full of countless personal possessions of the Titanic's wealthy passengers), the mysterious boiler room #6 and the cargo holds (which housed the luggage of the ship's first class passengers and remain largely unexplored).

LAST MYSTERIES OF THE TITANIC combines re-enactments, archival footage, and the results of two new Titanic dives with live updates from James Cameron from aboard one of the two MIR submersibles while at the wreck and from the Keldysh, his research vessel. Re-enactments were filmed using sets built during the production of the feature film, Titanic, and present a vivid look at rarely-seen areas of the vessel. As this is his last expedition to the doomed ship, the special also features Cameron's live farewell to the Titanic.

LAST MYSTERIES OF THE TITANIC is directed by James Cameron and produced by Andrew Wight. For Discovery Channel, executive producer is David McKillop.

Thank you, James. Already, I feel a certain sadness coming over me, b/c never again will we see our beloved TITANIC again, after this...Cameron's last dive. :cry: emoticon

Hopefully, all of this will come out on DVD/VHS video, so we can purchase it for our own TITANIC collection.

I know that THS (The Titanic Historical Assn.) will let us know when and where we can order it. KNOCK ON WOOD!!!

*Knocks on wood*

Well, I can assure you the feeling is mutual about this dive being our last to Titanic. Upsetting and almost like she sank all over again knowing we might never see her through all that we can - pictures, after this expedition. I really do hope we are provided with many images of the ship - providing this not only is the last expedition yet the ship is disintegrading rather quickly.

However whose to say this will be the true end. It was beleived in 1912 reaching Titanic at her depth was impossible and that she was lost forever - yet here she is - Ballard found and dove to her. I find it hard to beleive. Yet I always crave more information and such on the wreck. Imagine all the studies we can do through it all. I mean not to mention the disintegration rate - and that it would be quite interesting to measure it (as well as the "Sea Snow" fall.) I doubt this will be it, maybe for some time but not forever. Just seems odd that all those famous names in the Titanic world are going - and if this is their last trip than the odds are certainly not in our favor - yet lets not forget our new Generation - my generation.

Regardless I really do seek this release and I hope for a book as well as a DVD. I shall also stay tuned to see the 9 PM session about Titanic and the current dive. I'm blown out of my mind we will finally see the well preserved Turkish Baths. Much like the Ghosts of the Abyss dive back after the 1997 film was released, we are sure to expect many new photographs of the interiors, which excite me most of all.

Update

The Turkish Baths have been explored, as they were on July the 5th. The Arabian tiles have been reported to still be in place, as the Turkish Baths as well as the Swimming Bath are the greatest preserved areas of the wreckage.

There also will be a DVD release of the Cameron Expedition!

A video shot on the Keldysh by Bob of the Discovery Channel can he found Here

Re: 2005 Cameron Expedition

Don't miss tonights Discovery Channel special at 9 PM!

Here are a few hints of some what we will get see:

* Anoxic chambers, deep inside the hull - with artifacts in an incredible state of preservation.

* More information on the "coal fire" theory, discussed elsewhere in this sub-forum.

* New information on the "Rusticles" ... now believed to be one of the oldest forms of primordial life on the planet.

~~~~
Note: I would advise anyone to go check out the DC Site, however my opinion seems to take a rather different course when questioned about Encyclopedia Titanica. The site link is posted for members of TSOLD to veiw plans for the expedition. However I am not encouraging anyone to join - infact I would stand against it. Phil Hinds ET, I regard as nothing it use to be. Scientists and such taking this expedition (Including one - My favorite Author Dr. Charles Pellegrino whose theories will be discussed tonight at 9 - are dispised on ET for the purpose of jealousy. Therefore, you have been warned, be cautious and what you choose to do with the above provided links to ET is up to you.
Re: 2005 Cameron Expedition
Last night, I stayed up until midnight watching Cameron's 2/4 hour documentary, and after that I "had" to go to bed...because I just couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. :ahh: Why? I had had a rather long exciting day to boot. Check the Nearer My God To the thread, and you will find my reason. Okay?
Anyhow, I was totally amazed at how well preserved many of Titanic's porcelain and glass furnishings, the brass clock, were in the Turkish Bath; Captain's Quarters, etc. You could still make out the fireplace in the Straus' 1st Class Stateroom.
I also personally enjoyed the nice comments he made about my Will, and his actions that dreadful night of April 14 & 15, 1912. Infact, Cameron said that that forward most davit on the starboard boat deck stands as a monument to my Will...and how he worked feverishly to get three lifeboats launched all at once in that area of the ship.
I also loved the way Cameron integrated footage from his 1997 Academy Award Winning Film into the various documentary footage...including the scenes we had not seen before. That was outstanding! emoticon emoticon
Re: 2005 Cameron Expedition
I was amazed by the amount of new information that was presented. During the program Lee and I had emailed Cameron questions while he was on the Titanic! Lee had asked what his veiw of the Titanic's future was. Mine questioned reasons for the action taken on previous expeditions to Titanic - as to why steering Clear of "C" deck had taken place. Washed in debris? However, I sent it before a commercial and after they had returned to the program they were preparing to enter "C" deck! I wonder if it was my question/comment?
Regardless, I was blown away when the cranks on the Marconi Room were in place and wheeled to extreme. The idea that I learned Jack Phillips and his Marconi Partner actually fixed the wireless equipment was something new! Even the word "Volts" could be made out from under the glass on the wreck!
The Strauss stateroom's condition was extraordinary! The fact that inlaid material and trimming of intriquet detail remains in place, rather an unexpected blow to the mind! The clock polished to a shine and remains on the mantle of the intact fireplace - while the cabins over state of preservation was an all time high - was much a pleasent find. However I did notice the downblast effects taken place during the impact of the bow with the seafloor, had clearly effected the area. (As it did effect the aft end of the bow - the ship splitting at about cabin 67 and the cabin being explored was B 56.) What also was facinating about the program was the celtic intact design of the windows in what is beleived to have been the Duff Gordons suite!
However, the Turkish Baths take the cake! The tile, furniture and bronze fixtures all intact and in the highest state of preservation was just shocking. The tile with all its patterens visable! The design could be made out with ease! Much like it has been stated - the room was paneled in teak a wood that does not dissolve easy. Bronze that does not rust and Linoleum and tile that clearly remain in place! I was however disappointed the pool was not explored.
The chandeliers and such also were intruging. Much of the woodwork and images expressed much of the Luxgury Liners former elegence.
The mentioning of the davits and such were taken from the preivously stated examples in the 2001 Cameron expedition where it had also been thought of as a monument to Murdoch.
The integrated footage made it all worthwhile. Because that provides support to the mystery of the Grand Staircase's fate. The most elegant feature abourd Titanic. The widley accepted theory of it lifting being torn from it's iron foundations - becoming boyant and floating out of and plucking the dome after it had imploded are supported. Jack Thayer beleived he saw (which we know is rather impossible) the bow lift out of the water, which is now beleived to have been the staircase -where people may have been seen clinging on! The timing and his location make it so it may have been possible. Yet the footage revealied exactly how it looked when the dome had been shattered and the staircase raising towards the skylight. What is beleived is the waterfall into the stairwell from the dome had caused a whirlpool effect that scooped the stairs up and out of the shaft.
I had also veiwed the "Birth of the Titanic" the Untold Story before the Cameron preview which was very well done. It expressed many details of the ships passionate and competitive birth at Harland and Wolff to how she became unsinkable (The worlds greatest ship). Deaths of those working on her, to how her name came to be were all presented in grand detail and much color. Even how it ran was interesting, taking photographs while the film played showing how events took place in 1912. How Titanic came to be was the prime point of the program which had carried out it purpose rather well.
I stayed until about 1 o'clock recording, I couldn't miss a thing! Outstanding was the word to describe it all - and areas of the ship we did see were all grand. I was pleased to know how well Thomas Andrews love for the ship - as well as those who built her were reveiled. Even Ismay's true character - selfish and greedy. An ill omen from the start.
I also respect the fact that Dr. Pellegrino's theory in regards to the Coal Bunker Fire were incorperated into the program. Many aspects of his thoughts. Marchall provided his knowlege of the ship, Don of those who sailed on her (even as their cabins were being explored), Cameron with his footage (and excitment after seeing sites he re-rcreated for his movie) and Pellegrino's work!
I LOVE IT!
