MA, don't forget about the witness account (whom I believe was Mrs. Astor) that the collison was like rolling over a thousand marbles. Perhaps analysing this further (I.e. her location when she felt the crash, the shudder etc) would provide another good detail of support to the theory.

Those two questions are quite valid. I should think speed contributed, as it would regardless of either scenerio. Avoided, hardly.

The only new aspect of the program was the find, all the theories and ideas are recycled as I mentioned above. Dr. Pellegrino and WALTER LORD mentioned the grounding theory in both their books.

As did Capt. David Brown in his Last Log of the TITANIC..

I haven't got to see this particular programme yet, but hope to get the DVD soon. When I do, I will be able to comment further.

Re: TITANIC's Final Moments: Missing Pieces

I finally got to see this a few weeks back and I think that a grounding scenario makes a great deal of sense. It would certainly explain the testimony of survivors that it was like "going over a thousand marbles".

It was very eerie to see those pieces of TITANIC down there in the darkness with remnants of the anti-fouling paint still visible after more than 95 years. Since this was found quite a ways from the main wreck/debris field site, it is fascinating to wonder what else from TITANIC might await us out there in the darkness...
