Fox Deepstack, March 29th 2009
Just for once I was prepared this time, pen and paper, camera in hand etc to do a proper report and then I go and damned make it myself. Still, I managed to make notes of the key hands and a bit more so here goes.
Started off just a little later than expected so thanks most of you for making the effort to get there earlier. I'm still pondering over an idea for the next deepstack whereby you'll only get the full T10k chips if you pay in good time.
57 runners and the first casualty came 20 minutes into level 1. Now, normally when this person gets knocked out, I don't have too much sympathy for him as it's normally his own bloody fault but on this occassion, you got to feel for him a bit. Mid position limper James is raised by Frank. James reraises and Frank smooth calls. Flop K 7 4.
Raise, re-raise, re-re-raise etc until it's all-in and 20k is sitting in the pot. James flips 77 for the set. Frank flips KK for the top set. Turn 7 ouch.
It seemed there was action all over the place with big pots being seen on all tables and it was no surprise to see people dropping like flies. By dinner, ie 3 hours of poker, we'd lost 19 players which is a record for this deepstack. Play didn't seem to tighten up much after dinner either with still a steady flow of exits. It was only when we made the final 20 that things started to get a bit quieter. At this point we were talking a possibly early finish but it then took 45 minutes before we lost our first player of the last 20 and you realised we were set for another long one. Numbers slowly whittled down until we lost two in quick succession to leave us our final 10 at around 10.30pm It had taken 2+ hours to lose those last 10.
With the bubble saver agreed for 10th place we got the final table under way with the blinds at 3000/6000/600 and immediately we had action as the short stack was now free to just get it in. Sharon makes an early position raise with AQ and short stack Brad calls blind in the BB and flips 79. Flop AQ8 and it's looking grim. Turn J and River T and he's got his runner runner to double up against the flopped 2 pair. Ouch. Next hand it's Brad pushing all-in from the SB with K6 and Sharon calling from the BB with AT. First card out is a 6, last card of the flop is an A and it looks grim for Brad again but hey-ho.. the 6 appears on the river and he's now chipped up and Sharons the short stack. Next hand (yes, the action was this quick), Sharon pushes from the SB with Q7 and is called by Gary in the BB with KT. Q on the flop and she's doubled up. We're finding it difficult to lose players here.. So what does the dealer do, he deals the sort of hand that ensures you're going to lose players. Alan pushes for 32.5k, Brad is all in for 55k and Gary in the BB calls. Alan AK, Brad KK, Gary AA. Surprise surprise no one hits the board at all and we lose Alan in 10th and Brad in 9th.
The blinds are now up to 4000/8000/800 and Sharon is all-in for 14600 with AKc.. John Ryan calls from the BB with 85 and the K on the flop is more than good enough.
Derek Limps, John raises to 22k, Sharon raises all-in to 38.5k, Derek folds and John calls. Sharon shows 66 to Johns KK. No-one is surpised when he see a flop of 9 7 6.. John can't hit his 2-outer and is now the short stack and soon pushing for his last 8800. Sharon on the button, Gary in the SB and Briony in the BB all call. A flop of A 5 3, turn Q and river 7. Sharon has pocket 77s and knocks out John in 8th place.
Steve Nye raises to 16k and Derek pushes all-in for 51.5k having Steve covered. Steve makes the call with A8 and Derek flips 99. No one hits and Steve finishes 7th on his deepstack debut.
Next significant action sees Briony all-in from the Button for 43200 with a call from James in the SB. Briony 88 James AQ. flop T A K is enough for James to knock Briony out in 6th place.
Still action going on but no more casualites until the next level with blinds now at 5000/10000/1000
Gary raises to 40k and James is all-in for 85k which Gary calls. There were some sick hands and this is another of them. Gary shows A4. James 77. Flop Q 5 Q Turn 8 River 8.. James' pair is counterfeited and Garys A kicker wins. James out 5th.
Just for once we have a Twickenham final 4 smile
Sharon raises to 25k and Derek moves all-in for 72k and is insta-called by Sharon.. Derek 88, Sharon AA. No help on the board and Derek exits in 4th
Blinds at 6000/12000/2000
Gary raises from the button (again wink) to 41k and Steve (that's me) re-raises to 141k. Gary pushes for another 48k and have the oh **** feeling but naturally call.. Gary AK, Steve AT. No luck for me and I'm virtually done for even allowing for the short stack Ninja status.
Next hand i'm all in for 7k with both Sharon and Gary calling.. 46c on a board with 5 overcards and no clubs and you know you're struggling so that's me a gonner in 3rd.
By the time i've come back from my cigarette, Gary and Sharon are doing a deal and the game is over with the clock at 25 past midnight.
Well done to Gary and Sharon and thanks once again to everyone for supporting the day.
