LWN - Last Week's News
LWN: http://el-dubya-en.com
The submission policy at LWN is still a work in progress, but I do want to publish other writers in order to:
a) Have a site that reflects a variety of viewpoints;
b) Have material to post on the weekends;
c) Have more than one story in a given day;
d) Cover news stories that I'd otherwise have to pass on; and
e) Give myself a few days off every once in a while.
Before finding this forum or having any kind of clue about where to recruit satire writers, I posted to Craigslist and got two submissions.
One was very, very, very bad--but I published it by having the LWN Staff rip on it in the style of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (and yes, I did get the original writer's permission before doing so).
One was very, very, very good, but written in the style of the Onion. I had to rewrite the piece from scratch in the "house style" of LWN (again, with the original writer's permission).
Ideally, I'd like submissions that are well written, funny, fit the style of LWN, and don't require an iota of editing work from me (see reason "e" above). I want everyone to have fun and I can't imagine that having a piece ripped on or extensively rewritten would be much fun. But maybe that's just me.
I'm interested in any advice from others who have satire sites and accept submissions about how they handle things. Thanks in advance!

Re: LWN - Last Week's News
Hiya Tem 2 - welcome to the satirists graveyard. ;-)
Whatever happened to 'Tem 1'? Just askin'.
I liked your site; cute and different. I hope you do real well with it.
Getting good writers to write for you aint easy. Getting them to write consisentently and regularly is even harder. Keeping them is next to impossible, which is why 9 outta ten so-called 'satire sites' are one-man bands and why new ones are poppin' up a dime a dozen while the same number disappear off the face of cyberspace...
Most accomplished writers either have their own sites or blogs and if they don't they soon create one. Hell, it's a ten minute job with Blogger and it's free so why submit to some site where you don't have total control of your material when ya can do it yourself?
I only know of a handful of sites out of the hundreds online that have a dedicated team of writers and they took years to build up that kinda loyalty and committment for the reasons I've given above. Unless you pay them, but there are even fewer sites that do that and those that do have been around many years.
Of course, if you pay writers that means you gotta be earning and that takes a lotta hard work. I only know of one site that makes enough money to pay it's writers (and no, it aint the Spoof, though they do pay some writers in secret!)and that's been going for over five years.
But hey, that shouldn't stop you from trying. If your concept and material and presentation are original and exciting enough you'll attract writers. Not quickly and not many, but as you'll discover (if you haven't already) one really good, enthusiastic writer is worth ten college kids who just wanna see their names in lights.
The site I write for was started up in 2002 and has only acquired some really good writers in the last year and they were hard to get and harder to keep. The fact that it's run by an amazing British gal may have a bearing on that, at least I know of no other satire sites run by women, certainly none as brave and raunchy as utterpants! So I guess that makes them stand out on the web.
Hope that helps some and I wish ya luck!
Best,
--- Bree

Re: LWN - Last Week's News
So I guess I'm probably on my own unless I get very lucky. That's about what I expected, but it's good to have confirmation. It's still a fun project to work on, even if it's all or mostly on my own shoulders.

Re: LWN - Last Week's News
Hey Tem,
I'm not supposed to tell you this but I edit most of Bree's posts (she's from Texas and...well...here's an example of her writing: Ahll tellya whafor ifnya paise me.) People were complaining that they couldn't understand her.
I think I goofed on this one:
"The site I write for was started up in 2002 and has only acquired some really good writers in the last year and they were hard to get and harder to keep."
originally read:
"The sight ware I right just gottus some hard righters n they was gud ta keep - real gud."

Re: LWN - Last Week's News
and by the way, Bree, if Utterpants is having such a problem finding writers, why did Miranda have me arrested when I visted your office?

Re: LWN - Last Week's News
Give Mz Banks some slack and a couple of prayers tonight folks. She's a bit jittery because she and her city are about to be wiped off Rand Mc'Nally when Emily goes Cat-5 and does a sudden 3 degree turn towards the north east.

Re: LWN - Last Week's News
Hi Tem,
Took a look at your site. Very sharp and funny. Keep up the good work.
I especially like your 'the real story' parts, granting the reader a little about the inspiration for your ideas.

Re: LWN - Last Week's News
Thanks! I'm having fun with it and still tinkering with the format. I've also added a forum where I can talk to myself in a few different voices.

What you're doing sounds like (in a good way) what a type-writing, boat-loving, wool-bearing "PAL" of ours over at the spoof is also doing (in a baaaad way) ..
"Forum'ing themselves in a few different voices."
Poor Helium. Poor Morgan (Mz Truce). TheRealGod only knows how many writers there (at our B-loved spoof) are actually him .. her .. (them). The sheep.
