DeadBrain
Hi all,
Just blundered across this forum and wanted to invite you to consider sending your material our way.
DeadBrain's been going for almost four years now under the same management, which makes me feel quite old. We have UK and US editions.
Our submissions system is semi-automated - you can roll up off the street, log in and submit stories, but a human edits them and puts them online. We have bio pages for all authors if they want them.
(Believe it or not, we had one of the most advanced content management systems among satire sites when we started out. It creaks a little now but it still works. Improvements are on their way.)
As a writer myself I want to be as good to other writers as I possibly can. I'll do pretty much anything short of paying them - if only I could do that I would! It's still a long-term aim. Target for dealing with submissions is 24 hours max, though from time to time that can slip slightly. Most of the time if your stuff is accepted it's online within a day, and we'll tell you either way. Certainly I don't go around deleting old stories at random *ahem*.
We're looking for quality rather than quantity, but frequent updates are also important to us. Traffic is good, visitors stay around the site for a while once they're there and often come back again.
At the moment the UK edition, which I edit, is making an invisible push towards our election coverage, where we'll be trying some new things. All very exciting. We tend to do more politics/current affairs than anything else, but we consider other topics as well.
Anyway, hello, I hope some of you will send something my way, and I'll drop by here now and again to see how you're all doing.
Richard

Let me just back up what Richard just said. I have written several articles for DeadBrain and never been paid.

That's a telling recommendation. Tax-time in the UK?

I'll second that, Deadbrain is one of the better satire ezines out there which regularly publishes some original and very funny political stories. I submitted a couple of things to them in the past and found Allen a really nice, helpful guy.
They cud do with losing the pop-under ads tho, those really piss me off. ;-)

Re: DeadBrain
Hi all,
I'll happily second Richard's emotion. Thanks for the kind words, "briannabanks" (I'll take a hint if you're offering), and thanks also to Russus, for not using less-than-kind words despite the email I took way too seriously back in February (sorry).
The main difference between DB-UK and DB-US is that DB-US has a 350-word limit on all articles. We have done multi-part pieces to circumvent this as events warranted. More info appears in our Submission Guidelines.
Thanks for your time, and may Mel Gibson bless you all.
Warm regards,
Allen Voivod

Curious, how do you pronounce "AVOIVOD"???
is it "Ave oy vod" or "A Voy Vod" or ??? Just kidding Allen!
Sorry for the over worded submission. Feel free to shorten it to fit.
I'm one of those crazy writer types who pays absolutely no attention to "how many words my story is." I get an idea and whatever it takes to convey my message/story, then that's how many words it usually ends up being.
I must say that a restriction of 350 words or less works for me just fine (it's rare that I go beyond 350) and is sooooo much better than TheSpoof's 350 word minimum.
So, don't be a stranger and try not to aviovod us here at ISWG... keep coming back, it works... (no, that's that wrong motto) - ummm... Oh hell, we look forward to you becoming a regular! (yeah, that's what I meant to say!)

I agree that certain stories call for certain lengths, but I do find myself word counting pretty often anyway. Personally, I'm just getting going by word 350. Most of my stories nowadays lap that word count at least once.
Allen,
Can longer than 350 word articles about American issues be submitted to the UK version of Deadbrain?

Re: DeadBrain
lol
Spot on, yeah. In the beginning the only edition was the UK edition, which did a lot of American stories as well, but since the split we've been trying to keep them separate. There are exceptions (such as a couple of particularly good regulars that I couldn't let go of), but in general we like writers to submit articles to the most appropriate site.
