posticon The Race Race (9 - 5)

Bonjour kids,
I wrote an article in the 1st issue about the slow death of my brain i.e. an office job. Does anyone have a similar experience? How did you get through it, with creativity intact? Are you now in your dream job? How did you do it? Or are you still stuck like me? If so, let's come up with ideas on how to survive!

Hello there miss Cunnane.

Well, as you should know I used to work 10-8 at the hole that is LBM selling mobile phones and boob jobs.

To be perfectly honest the way I stayed sane was by spending every available moment talking (to Greg) on Lucy's forum and the rest writing stories about people I'd called in my call log book. This was the most fun bit. Particularly when I'd call men who I had on good authority had enquired about penis enlargements who strenuously denied any interest in plastic surgery.

Though I can't really claim to have kept sane, I did manage to keep entertained.

As far as dream jobs go, hopefully I'm on my way. One day I shall own a huge farm in the Ukraine and I'll spend my days writing and riding my horses and my nights fighting and riding my husband. Who will of course be a hot eastern european gypsy type. Oh yes.

Anyway I've sidetracked with fantasy... I think the key is learning to switch off. Remember that your job isn't your life. Also not getting complacent and forgetting that this isn't what you want to do forever, it's easy to forget! Keep your goals in mind and your mind active and keep your eyes open for that dream job.

Oh and this one applies to all aspects of life- never settle.

In the words of Madonna, "Don't go for second best, baby".

Our web access is very limited, lots of sites are restricted, and we're also banned from viewing any non-finance based sites - this can technically lead to instant dismissal. Although, look, I'm at work and I'm posting on this forum! yay!

At one stage, they brought a ban of reading books and magazines and newspapers inbetween calls, and also scribbling doodles/non-work based writing. This is still in place, as far as I'm aware, but no one I know has yet been in trouble. It's ridiculous if you have a gap of 20 minutes between calls, but you can't read/write/draw - this is why my brain was becoming an inefficent calculator instead of a magical world with pixies and rock stars and stories and music.

Hmm i guess if you don't have to write anything as part of work then it's difficult to hide what you'r up to. We had to write lots you see. I also had no idea that HBOS stood for "the nazi party".

****ing ridiculous! Why don't they just invent robots to do the work. Then they wouldn't have to deal with this pesky breathing business.

Haha, it's true, they need some robots. Robots would probably be more efficient and reliable than a lot of the staff here.

They let us decorate our desks for the world cup, with each work group having a different country as the theme, and for a couple of weeks it was very jolly and fun. But then, as soon as your team was out of the world cup, the call centre manager came round and made you tear down your decorations. Mean as hell.
