The official DEA review of Star Trek

I know the purpose of this forum is more for Grandeur related stuff, but thought I'd post the review in here to see if anyone would respond. It is actually easier to respond in here to topics than it is on facebook..

***Spoilers ahead... If you haven't seen the new movie and don't want information about it, stop reading now________

No one has done this yet. And I believe I'm a pretty fair reviewer. I've done reviews before on the Trek BBS for Star Trek and Star Wars. Keep in mind I'm just a guy that lives in the south, and loves Star Trek.

Here's mine on the newest Star Trek movie.

Excellent from beginning to end.

Favorite attributes character concerned - McCoy, Scotty.

I really liked the way these characters were developed during the movie despite you got to see just a little of Scotty. Kirk and Spock of course dominated the show as they should. I knew that they would be a focused part of the movie, but was hoping others would make their presence known as well. I also expected Uhura to be important from the previews. She certainly was.

~USS Kelvin

First act in the movie was fantastic. Excellent writing and good working in the part the scene was supposed to do. It's a tear dropper as well. The one thing I wish they’d done differently here is made Kelvin a Daedalus class ship. That is one we know existed around this time, yet have never seen.

~Crash Corvette

I actually think this was a scene that wasn’t needed because I expected it was simply part of the previews. Yet I understand why it was included for people that haven’t seen them. As well as to develop Kirk at the young age and per take of the movie, seeing he always took risks.

~Bar scene

It was done very well. I wouldn’t have expected it in Iowa as in having a contingent of Starfleet officers being at a bar, nor Uhura. Pike coming in certainly changed things. Talking to Kirk was the best part of it after seeing his beaten face (of course he has a beaten face through the movie one way or another). I certainly don’t want to be a cupcake.

~Kobishi Maru

We’ve always heard how Kirk beat it, the details were never explained. Now it’s fun to see how he did it and the repercussions. While an enjoyable scene it still seemed just too easy. Main complaint here was that they called them klingon warbirds. That’s something that should have been noticed and corrected from the start. I found it very humorous he was eating an apple the entire time. Finding out Spock was the original designer was a surprise. Although it was briefly mentioned in ST2, it never alluded to the fact Spock was the designer.

~Court marshal/Distress call/Getting underway

You could almost feel the pull of loyalties being stretched here among the soon to be Enterprise bridge crew. Understanding both sides – Kirk/Spock and still trying to remain loyal to both. I wonder what actually would have happened if the distress call hadn’t interrupted. Would Kirk have been drummed out of the academy?

I never did quite understand why Uhura was assigned to the Farragut, then to rather easily argued her way to Enterprise. Not sure what the purpose of that scene was. The way McCoy got Kirk on Enterprise was certainly one of the funniest parts of the movie, balloon hand and all.

The Sulu booboo was a pretty nice touch as well. Funny how the booboo may have saved Enterprise from the initial destruction.

One little continuity gripe here. One in which could be explained away with the alternate timeline.. Unless I just missed it, there didn’t appear to be any other Constitution class ships in the task force. Yet, we know the Farragut was there since it’s one of the ships cadets were transporting to. I believe there were two other classes of ships, none of which I recognized. Which brings up an interesting question… In this timeline, is NCC-1701 a Constitution class ship, or considered something else?

~Pike leaving/Skydrop

I think the best part of this sequence were the special effects. That’s most of what the scene was with addition of a well choreographed fight scene. “Fencing” got a chuckle for sure. I was surprised Pike made Kirk first officer despite the fact he wasn’t even supposed to be on board.

~Vulcan destroyed

Another excellent scene special effects wise. It was very fitting that Spock went to save his parents. Aside from Spock loosing his mother, it was a very touching part where he enters in his log ‘he’s an endangered species’.

~Kirk expelled/Ice planet

The fight between Spock and Kirk was bound to happen, so that was an interesting part to see. The chase special effects were good yet again. But, it was a little to reminiscent of Star Wars episode 2 with the creatures in my opinion.

It also seemed a little too convenient that Kirk just happened to be sent to the planet future Spock was on. Yet that can be easily dismissed because the fact this sequence ties the entire movie together. Nimoy was absolutely fantastic in this part. Finally getting to see Scotty was another good part here, though I still don’t know what the deal was with his little buddy. At first I thought it was some kind of a pet, but apparently in the last scene it’s another Starfleet officer.

~Returning/Spock relieved

I’ll touch on the pipes a little later. It was funny how Scotty and Kirk got separated. One thing is for sure, Spock can kick some butt. I actually felt sorry for Spock when Kirk began agitating him with dispatch, then felt sorry for Kirk for getting his butt kicked that bad. With that scene though and Spock resigning, things finally get into focus.

 ~Final battle sequence

I think they should have probably done more with Spock resigning, then so quickly coming back to duty. But in this sequence, there was so much to put in they probably had to cut some stuff. Spock so easily figuring out how to fly the machine was, urm, fascinating. “I’ve got your gun” may have been done before, but worked well.

Once all the busy stuff was done, and maybe one of my favorite scenes. Kirk offers diplomacy, and Spock questions it. I didn’t expect that at all! It took me thinking about a while to understand that was a form of balance between them. It’s also likely going to be focused on with any future incarnation.

~Taking official command

Finally get to see Kirk in gold, Scotty in red, and the crew forming together as we remembered them. Also get to see Pike in a wheelchair. Still not sure what place Scotty’s little friend will play in the future, but I bet it’ll be interesting to see.

~The Enterprise herself

Lots of ups and downs for me here.

Is it just me, or was there just an incredibly large amount of pipes on the ship? I mean, it seemed like warehouses worth. I guess I’m too used to decks and decks and having a problem evening it out.

I’ve heard more than a few people complain about the bridge lighting. I however liked it bright and with a very clean look.

I haven’t been a big fan of the nacelles every since I saw them in the trailers. They seem too bulky on the front, which makes them look too long for the ship. Only think I can attribute to that is the ship was just launched, and that refinements will be made along the way. Of course we know Constitution class NCC-1701 had many refinements during its lifetime.

Aztek hull pattern and visible phaser arrays were good to see. I always imagined the TOS Enterprise had them despite the fact it wasn’t noticeable. Of course, they fired a torpedo too, and it didn’t sound as I had hoped.

~Final thoughts

It was a very good movie. I actually prepared myself to be disappointed, but was pleasantly surprised. I wasn’t sure what I was in for, but you certainly have to keep an opened mind, and take it for what it is. It’s an entire new timeline now, open for new stories and new adventures depending on how much success it has, and how much the powers that be want to exploit the success. Lets all hope they use their heads on this new franchise.
