Re: Is this big news in the States?
No our debate isn't done I was just saying you had a great point. And I truely enjoy our conversation about this matter. While talking about this case there is another that didn't gain much air time as this one were another female teacher was having a sexual relationship with a student. I can't think of the name but it happens more than you care to realize.

Re: Is this big news in the States?
Hey everyone, I'm gonna drop my two cents on the issue. This was all going on when I was in my sophmore and junior years in high school, and I was in shock. It didn't help that I was going to school only a few hours away from where that was going on, but I couldn't believe that was going on. And you're both right, it was so wrong and she didn't really get punished. It is all too common now for teachers and students to get together, and perhaps if the punishment had been stiffer, it would be a deterrent, but I don't think so. And I can't remember if that boy had been going to therapy, but he should have been. His parents tried to keep them apart after he'd turned 18, but he's legally an adult and they can't unless a court found him ......what's the word?.... Incompetent? I can't remember. And I vaguely remember another case like that, now that you mention in Jermbry. But I have a story a bit opposite. A girl I went to school with who was a pretty good friend of my sister for a while ended up with one of the teachers at my school. It was actually going on around the same time as the Mary Kay thing. They started having an affair, and quite a bit of us students knew they were having sex in classrooms after school, but nobody said anything. I think he was in his late 30's or early 40's and she was 17 when it started. After she graduated, he quit and they moved across the state and got married and had kids.
Don't get me wrong, I am totally against teacher student relationships like that, but with my own experiences, I've become pretty numb to those things anymore. It all happens much more than people are aware of, but those who do know about it don't say anything. So it doesn't matter if the laws are tougher, and punishments are much more strict, because they're not getting caught. What we need is for people to speak out when they know things like this are going on. Because even though Mr. Easter (the teacher in my school) "fell in love" and married my friend, who knows if he might've had relations with other students at schools prior to coming to ours, or possibly actually raped them?
And as for the parents? They just let their kids do what they want anymore. There is no parenting. Kids come and go and do whatever they feel like, and the parents are uninvolved, except to give the kids whatever they want to get them out of their hair. At least, that's the way it was a lot where I grew up. Parents are too busy trying to make a living to be parents, or they're too wrapped up in themselves and selfish (like my cousins) to take care of their children. That's why up where we lived there was so much drug and alcohol use among teens, as well as pregnancy. If parents would be parents, the problems would be so much smaller, and things like teachers and students having affairs would be happening near as much.

Re: Is this big news in the States?
So do you think things would be different if there were more stay at home parents around?

Re: Is this big news in the States?
Not necessarily. If the parents don't take interest in their child's life and be parents, the result will still be the same, no matter if there's a parent home all the time or not. They just have to care enough to get involved and set rules up. Though, I do believe that it would help, were more families where one parent didn't have to work and could stay at home. However, with economics being what they are, especially down here, that's not really possible, unless one works out of town.

Re: Is this big news in the States?
To me, the big issue is that their affair was such a betrayal of trust. Teachers are trusted with children. They are authority figures, and for a teacher, whether male or female, to take advantage of a child, is a terrible thing. I find it disgusting to think that an adult would find a 12 year old sexually attractive. From what I know of the case, I suspect that his mother wasn't around a lot. In fact, his mother spoke in Mary Kay's defense at one of the initial hearings, which persuaded the judge to let her off on parole. That was when the two were discovered in a car, and when the second child was conceived. After that, she was put in jail.
Whatever happens with their life now is their business, I guess.

Re: Is this big news in the States?
I agree with you parents need to be more invovled with their childrens lives and when they do find something that is going on act as a parent and stop trying to be your child's friend. Sure the penalty for that kind of abuse should be very tough. Sex offenders come in all shapes, sizes and both sex. I also think that as a country we need to really treat this as it is an attack on our youth by predators.
