Deathbed Confessions
They all sat around his bed, surreally watching his life pass away. Brennan's heart monitor's slow, steady, beep faded into the background, creating the music of the hospital.

"Right on time," Brennan smirked sarcastically, itching to start fighting. The Genetic Security Agents all stepped out of their matching black SUV's in matching suits and matching sunglasses. The 5 agents walked towards the 4 member's of Mutant X, who were presently still lounging on a park bench.
"How should we divide this?" Emma asked, observing the agents walk in an organized formation, probably drilled into them by the GSA for intimidation.
Jesse smiled a little. "Emma and I will take the two on the right, Brennan and Shal take the three on the left."
"Got my back?" Brennan asked Shalimar, more out of the team spirit than actual concern.
"As always," she answered.
The 5 agents were getting closer; Mutant X still hadn't moved from their leisurely spot. "Emma, use your telempathy to warn the others if any of us gets hurt. One person goes down, we all pull out, got it?" Brennan ordered.
Emma nodded solemnly. "Anything else?" she teased.
"Yeah," he said. "Let's kick some ass."
All four jumped off the bench simultaneously, like sharks smelling blood. Five on four, it was hardly fair for the agents. Like some comic book cartoon fight, they lined up and stared at each other for a few seconds until Brennan leapt up into the air and kicked an agent straight in the chest. Like an "on" switch had been flicked, everyone jumped into action. The fight had begun.

They all sat around his bed, surreally watching his life pass away. Brennan's heart monitor's slow, steady, beep faded into the background, creating the music of the hospital.
"Anybody want coffee?" Emma asked suddenly. Jesse, Shalimar, and Adam jumped out of their seats.
"Yeah," Jesse said, finding his voice first.
"I'll help you," Adam offered, getting up. He reached for her hand and gently squeezed it. It might have been reassuring if Emma weren't a telempath.
Jesse and Shalimar sat across from each other, on opposite sides of Brennan. They stared silently at him.
"Do you mind if I have a second alone with him?" Jesse asked.
"Of course not," Shalimar said sweetly. She got up and left the room.
Jesse breathed in deeply and grasped Brennan's hand. "I can't believe this is happening. You're not the one who should be dying. It should be me. If I just done what I was supposed to, you wouldn't have gotten hurt."
He stopped talking for a second and ducked his head down. When he raised it, tears were streaming down his face. "I'm the one who should be dying right now! He was my man and I didn't take care of him. He was my responsibility. If I hadn't been so stupid, I would have checked to make sure he was unconscious. I should have checked…" He breathed in sharply, causing him to cough. "I saw him get back up… I saw him lunge for your back. I should have thrown myself in front of you. He was my problem. I deserve the consequence, not you… I'm so sorry, Brennan."
Shalimar sighed softly as she watched Jesse cry over Brennan through the window of his hospital room. She couldn't hear what he was saying, but it was obviously horrible.
"I'm sorry for everything, Bren. I was never the brother I should have been to you. We should have spent more time together. I should have known what was really important. Computers, girls, cars, repairs, it all came before you. I'm an idiot. If I would have only known…"
Shalimar gently cleared her throat in the doorway. Jesse's head snapped up and his face flushed, embarrassed.
"He knows you cared," she stated, offering him a reassuring smile. "Do you mind if I have a few minutes, too? That is, if you're done."
"Go ahead," Jesse said, getting up. Shalimar sat back down in his chair. He squeezed her shoulders supportively and then left the room.
Shalimar grabbed Brennan's hand. "I don't really know what to say to you," she began quietly. "I'm sorry, for one. Its my fault you're here. I was supposed to be watching your back. It was my job. I didn't see that agent… That’s no excuse… Brennan, if you wake up, you can hate me forever for doing this to you.
"You're my best friend," she continued. "You don't even know how important you are to me. Just seeing you every day and knowing you're there for me… sometimes it's all that gets me through. I guess what I'm trying to tell you is I love you."
Brennan's life less body was only confirmed alive by the steady beat of the heart monitor. His expressionless face, his slacked arms, weighing heavily in Shalimar's hand.
"I don't just love you like Emma loves you. I mean I really love you. If you woke up and you didn't hate me for putting you here, I would marry you." She shook her head, as if she were trying to get rid of the thought. "Sorry," she muttered. "I guess… I guess I just am going to miss you."

Re: Deathbed Confessions
"We all will," Emma said behind Shalimar. "Are you doing ok?" she asked.
"Great," she said, choking on a tear. She smiled a little. "I guess not."
"If you were doing fine, I would be worried," Emma told her. "Do you mind if-"
"Not at all," Shalimar said quickly. "I need to get some fresh air anyways."
Shalimar and Emma exchanged places and with the soft click of the door, Emma began.
"I am so sorry. This is all my fault." She started crying uncontrollably. Her tears escaped onto Brennan's bed, making big, discolored splotches against the blinding white.
"I was supposed to get you out if you got hurt. I didn't get you out in time. That agent practically killed you before we could get him off. If I had been paying more attention to my job, I would have sensed your pain before he did any damage… I'm never going to forgive myself for this. I swear, Brennan, never.
"What am I going to do?" she whispered, then laughed. "I'm being so selfish. Here you are in a hospital bed, and I'm thinking about myself. Especially because I practically put you here. Brennan, you're the team's strength. Without you, we're weak, mentally and physically. Nobody is ever going to be the same again. Gosh, I'm going to miss you so much!"
Emma broke down and began to cry again. She cradled Brennan's hand against her face, feeling his warmth for the last time.
Two strong arms wrapped around her body and she relaxed into their comfort. Adam kissed the back of her head and began whispering to her it would be okay.
"He's like my brother," she cried.
"My son," Adam added, looking down at Brennan. "I knew I sent you to do dangerous things, but I never thought that this moment would actually come."
"I'll leave," Emma offered, getting up. Adam took her spot. She left the room.
"I really never thought I would have to do this. Somehow, I thought I would always be able to save you. But not this time. This time, the damage was too extensive. Even Gabriel Ashlocke was human.
"I'm sorry I couldn't save you. I'm sorry I relied too much on myself to help you. Maybe if I had gotten outside help… I don't know. I don't have all the answers. But I do know that you're my son and I wish I could save you this time." Adam looked into Brennan's face and sighed. "Its my fault I couldn't save you. When the battle is over, no matter what happened, it's my responsibility to make you healthy again. I messed up. I failed you. I'm incredible sorry."
"Dr. Kane?"
Adam turned around to see another doctor in the doorway. "Yes?" he asked.
"I need to talk to you about Brennan," the doctor told him. "If we could step out into the hallway to discuss it."
"Of course," Adam agreed. He got up and followed the other doctor outside. Jesse, Emma, and Shalimar were all gathered around the window. "Why don't you go in," Adam suggested to his team. Obediently and wordlessly, they filed back into the room.
The three of them sat around their fallen teammate, tears streaming unabashed down their faces. It was pure torment, the emotions flooded the room. The deathly quiet atmosphere, besides the rhythm of the heart monitor, added to the feeling of looming devastation.
"This is all my fault," Shalimar whispered softly. "I should have been watching his back."
"He was my man," Jesse told her. "I should have taken better care of him. If this is anyone's fault its mine."
"Yeah right," Emma retorted. "It was my job to make sure everybody was alive and well during the fight. I didn't notice Brennan was down until it was too late."
The door swung open and Adam walked in. The three snapped up.
"This is my fault, if it is anybody's," Adam stated. "You all have jobs in fights and it is your responsibility to follow through, but I send you into those fights. And it's my job to take care of you after you come back."
Shalimar opened her mouth in protest, but Adam's soft smile stopped her. "We could analyze this until we died and we could never agree. But the fact is, even though we all made mistakes, we've all made mistakes before. Brennan knew all that and he still trusted us with his life. True, we all failed him, but he knew we weren't perfect."
Adam walked up to the respirator. "Brennan, we're sorry we failed you and I'm sure we'll never forget you. We all love you. You don't know how much we'll miss you. I'm proud of you and I love you, son."
He pressed a button and the heart monitor's steady beep slowed further and further until it was the high pitched heart piercing ring of death.
