When They Get You

When They Get You

Summary: Emma's having trouble with her powers, the gubernatorial canditate is spreading the word on New Mutants, and Brennan's brother is being hunted by the GSA.

"Mutants are among us! They take our jobs, our money, they're taking over our cities and countries! You wont know they're there until they get you. They have powers, you know. They can get inside your mind and find out all your secrets. They can burn down your house and give you diseases with just a touch or a thought. Mutants need to be destroyed!"

Emma turned down the volume to 0 when Brennan came in. The man on the screen was surrounded by people applauding and rallying against new mutants.
"What's that?" he asked, skimming the room for anything that he might want.
"Just a political rally," she lied. "Suez is getting a lot of support."
Brennan grabbed a magazine from the pile and left, muttering something about goodbye. Emma turned it off and went into the meditation room. Suez was getting a lot of attention for his position on mutants which were barely rumored. So far only the sci-fi people believed it but she was worried about who else might decide to listen.
"Emma?" She opened her eyes and looked towards the door. "Emma!"
Emma realized that the noise was coming from her ring and brought her hand down from her meditation pose. "Yeah, Adam?"
"I was getting worried," Adam said.
"Sorry, I was sort of lost in thought," she said, shaking her head clear of all the images she had just gotten. "What's up?"
"Have you had any problems with your telempathy?" he asked. "Stray images, unusual headaches, that sort of thing?"
"Yes, actually. Just a few seconds ago, why?"
"Just meet me at the computer and I'll explain there," Adam said.
"I'll be right there," she said. Emma stood up and stretched out her back. She straightened out her tank top and walked out.
"Em!" Brennan shouted, running to catch her. "You going to see Adam too?"
"You too?" she asked.
"Yep," he said. "Do you have any idea what this is about?"
"Nope," she said. They climbed the stairs to the upper level. Adam, Shalimar, and Jesse were gathered around the big screen. "What's going on?"
"Last night Peter Berndict escaped from prison," Adam said. The screen showed a picture of a man that looked a little like Brennan with longer, lighter hair and harder eyes.
"He looks like you," Emma commented, reading the stats listed next to him. Peter Berndict, 22, convicted of armed robbery and attempted murder.
Brennan stared at the picture. "That's…"
"Who?" Shalimar asked, looking up at him.
"It's impossible," he said, turning away from them. "That can't be my brother. He's supposed to be in England."
"Wait," Jesse said, trying to figure things out. "Is he your brother or not?"
"I don’t know," Brennan said. "That's him- his picture, but last I heard, he was Joshua Mulray and working on his ph. D in physics in England."
"Well obviously something's not right here," Adam said. "Brennan, can you contact Joshua where he's supposed to be?"
"Sure," Brennan said, jumping down the stairs.
"Shalimar, Jesse, you guys go find out exactly what happened last night. Emma, we need to talk in the lab," Adam instructed.
"And how are we supposed to do that?" Jesse asked.
"You're resourceful," Adam said, leaving with Emma. "Think of something."

"There was a man, not Joshua or Peter or whoever he is. It was raining and there was a huge building. There were guards."
"Was he being held prisoner?" Adam asked.
Emma closed her eyes and tried to remember. She shook her head. "I don't know."
"Do you know where it was?" he asked.
"No," Emma said. "I'm sorry, Adam."
"No, no, it's okay," Adam said. "I was just hoping that you had gotten images from Peter. If Brennan is right and they are brothers you might have unconsciously tried to link with him. Just tell me if anything unusual happens."
"I will," Emma promised. She was just about to leave when Brennan came in.
"Joshua isn't in England and his roommate told me he's been gone for about a year," he said.
"That's about how long he's been in jail," Adam said. "I think it's safe to say that they're the same person." They heard footsteps in the hall. "Shalimar and Jesse are back."
They both walked into the lab. Shalimar held out a plastic bag. "Guess what we found," she said.
Adam looked inside. There was a prison uniform. "This will probably have some DNA on it, or at least fingerprints," he said. "Good work."
"That's not all," Jesse said. "Our escapee took a guy's wallet. We found it a few blocks up thanks to Shalimar. The only things missing were the guys business cards. He works at 'Earth Travels', a travel company about an hour from there. We got the address and the phone number."
"Very good," Adam said. "Can you go back and find out where Joshua Mulray or Peter Berndict is headed and contact me when you know?"
"No problem," Shalimar said. They both ran out.

"Can I help you?" a young woman asked at the front desk of Earth Travels.
Shalimar smiled. "My fiancée and I are getting married in three months and we want to plan a honeymoon," she lied.
"Congratulations," she said. "Do you have an appointment?"
"Uh, no," Jesse said.
"Oh well, it's no problem. Tuesday mornings aren't usually very busy," she said. "You can wait over there and I'll try and find someone who isn't busy."
"Thanks," Jesse said. They sat by a glass wall. "Fiancée?" he questioned.
"I had to think of something," Shalimar said.
"So do you have any more of a plan?"
"Just go with it," Shalimar whispered. The woman and another lady walked towards them. "Hello."
"Hi, I'm Laura Hill," she said.
"I'm Jesse Kilmartin and this is Shalimar," Jesse introduced. They were led down the hall to her office. Ms. Hill took her chair and Jesse and Shalimar sat in the chairs in front of the desk.
"So you're planning your honeymoon?" she asked. "Any ideas where you might want to go?"
"We aren't sure," Shalimar said. "Do you have any suggestions?"
"Most couples want to go to Hawaii. I have a booklet for Kauai; let me go get it," she said, leaving them.
"That was easier than I thought," Shalimar said, getting on the computer. "Go stall her."
"Sure, sweetheart," he said, leaving. She looked up Joshua Mulray first. He had a flight to England in two days.

Mason Eckhart relaxed back in his chair and turned on his computer. There were three emails waiting for him. He skipped to the last one, a news bulletin about a man who escaped from prison two days ago. "Ah, so you escaped again," he said, opening it.

New York- A man escaped from a state prison last night at approximately 11:30. Peter
Berndict was arrested on accounts of attempted murder and armed robbery. He
was convicted on October 12 and was sentenced to 25 years.

"Miss Peterson, would you join me in my office?" Mason said on his intercom. A few minutes later a woman came in wearing the usual business suit and her hair pulled back in a pony tail.
"Yes, sir?"
"I need to you find this man and get rid of him," he ordered, pushing a picture of him across the desk.
"How?" she asked.
"I don't care," he said. "You may use any personal that you feel is necessary. His name is Joshua Mulwray. Dr. Harrison enhanced his powers, and in return we only asked that he run a few errands for us. He got caught and I fabricated enough evidence to get him locked away. He escaped last night and he needs to be destroyed. Also, his brother is Brennan Mulwray."
   "Who?" she asked.
"One of Adam's people," he said, annoyed at the thought of them. "Just get rid of him."
Miss Peterson nodded and walked off.

Re: When They Get You

"You're in my seat."
Joshua Mulray opened his eyes and yawned. "What?"
The woman in the aisle way shoved her ticket in his face. He glared up at her. She sighed impatiently. "Hold on!" he said, louder and angrier than he meant. He got settled again in his seat and tried to go back to sleep. It had been days.
"Are you going to snore?" a little girl asked on his left.
"I don't know. People can't hear themselves when they sleep," Joshua snapped.
"Are you always mean?" she asked. "Did you know that people die sooner when they're mean? My mom told me that. She's the smartest person that I know. Her name is Linda and she sits in the seat behind me but right now she's in the bathroom."
"Shut up," Joshua said angrily.
"Fine," she said, folding her arms and pouting. Joshua tried to get back to sleep. Getting back to England had been easier than he thought. He found a travel agency right off and booked a flight. Using the name Joshua Mulray seemed a lot safer than Peter Berndict, who was wanted in three states.
"Mr. Mulray?"
"What now?" Joshua said annoyed. He looked up to see a flight attendant. "Yes?"
"You're wanted in the back," she said. He stood up and followed her to the back where the food was kept. The door closed behind them. The flight attendant kneed him in the back and forced him onto the wall. "Don't move," she warned.
"Ease up, Shalimar," a man said. Joshua tried to turn his head to see who it was. "It's not like he's a big threat to us. And he is my brother."
"Brennan?" he said, trying to push himself out of Shalimar's lock. She hesitated; then moved away. Joshua turned to face his brother. "It's really… wow, I never thought I'd see you again."
Brennan looked angrier than Shalimar thought he would. "Are you Peter Berndict?"
"Not anymore. You don't really understand what I've been through. I have this power. I can move things with my mind, or well, I used to be able to. I was living in England, just like everybody thinks, but then a man contacted me-"
"A man?" Shalimar asked, cutting him off. "Bleached hair, weird purple glasses, white skin?"
"Yeah," Joshua said. "Eckhart something. Anyways, he made me do things for him-"
"Armed robbery and attempted murder," Brennan filled in. "Okay, we believe you, but you need to get off this plane before we land."
"Why?" Joshua asked.
"Eckhart'll have his GSA agents all over the airport by the time we get there," Brennan said, looking around the room for anything they could use.
"Wait, if Eckhart knows, couldn't they be onboard?"
"Okay, everybody stand back," Brennan ordered. Shalimar gently pushed Joshua back against the wall. Brennan created a ball of electricity in his fingertips.
"Hold on," Shalimar said, leaning towards the door. Her eyes started to glow. "Okay, now!"
Brennan threw the electricity towards the door and it fell down. He stepped over it. A GS agent was underneath.
"Good timing," he said as Shalimar and Joshua joined them. Five more men came down the aisle. "Everyone get out of here!" he shouted at all the passengers. They all disappeared behind the curtain.
Shalimar jumped up and landed on two arm rests in the aisle. Her eyes flashed yellow. Brennan ran across the seats to the other aisle. "Stay behind me," Shalimar said quietly to Joshua. He nodded. The first man ran toward her. Shalimar kicked his face with her right foot. He stumbled back, blocking the others behind him. "Is that all you've got?" she teased.
The man ran to tackle her. Shalimar put her hand on his head and flipped over him, landing in between him and the GS agent behind him. She jumped up and kicked her legs out, hitting one in the face and one in the neck. They fell down.
Brennan punched one of the men and he fell down in the aisle. The woman behind him smiled. "You wouldn't hit a woman, would you?" she asked.
"No," Brennan said, looking around. He picked up a blanket from the seat next to him. She tried to punch him but he twisted her around and wrapped the blanket around her throat. He sent a small current of electricity through it and she collapsed. Brennan held onto the blanket and rolled it up. The last man pulled out a gun and aimed it at his head.
"Don't move or I'll shoot," he threatened. Brennan put his hands up and dropped the blanket. Shalimar came up from behind and hit him over the head. He picked up the gun and tucked it in his belt.
"We make a pretty good team," she said, admiring their work. Six GS agents were unconscious including one underneath a door. "Now what?"
Brennan sat down in one of the seats. "I guess we're going to England."

"Last night, governor candidate Miguel Suez had a record turn out of supporters at his most recent speech on what he calls New Mutants. The crowd included Mayor Nikkori and rival candidate John Rige, although most were sci-fi fans. Suez feels that New Mutants need to be found and destroyed, although their existence is only a rumor in the tabloids. Other points he made last night are on teen-"
Emma turned off the TV. It seemed like every time she wanted to watch, there was another story on Suez. She had planned to tell Adam before the problem with Joshua started but everything had been so busy that she had forgotten. She looked at her watch. They would have landed in England by now or at least tried to call. She went over to Jesse who was at the computer at usual.
"Any word from them?" she asked.
"Nothing," he told her. "But I got the high score on Alien Busters." Emma sighed and looked at the screen. Little green men were running around a sign that said 'Jesse 1,903,500'. Under it was 'Brennan 1,622,100'.
"Tell me if you hear from them," Emma said, leaving. She wandered around the sanctuary aimlessly.
"YOU WON'T KNOW THEY'RE THERE UNTIL THEY GET YOU!"
Emma fell to the ground and covered her ears with her hands. The noise stopped and she shook her head and got up. "I think that counts as unusual," she said, going to the lab.
Adam looked up from his computer. "What is it, Emma?"
"I'm not sure," she said. "I just heard someone's voice in my head."
"Sit down," he said, leading her over to one of the beds. "Do you know what they were saying?"
"You wont know they're there until they get you," Emma repeated exactly as she heard it. "It sounds so familiar."
"Okay, try to think. Have you seen any movies lately? Anything on TV or-"
"Miguel Suez!" she shouted.
"The candidate for governor?" Adam asked. "The one who believes there are mutants?"
"Yes," Emma said, nodding. "I remember that from one of his speeches I watched a few days ago. I was going to tell you but I guess you already know."
"I've been watching him too. It's important that you remember everything from now on, okay?"
Emma nodded again. "I'm going to go lie down," she said. Emma went to her room and changed into her yoga clothes. The images from a few days ago were getting sharper like they always did. She could see a lawn and a long building that looked like a mid-evil fortress almost. The building looked familiar to her too. The feeling she got from it was like she had been there before. And it was definitely Miguel Suez's memories. The voice and the images belonged together. Emma got up and ran back to Adam.
"I figured it out," she said.
"What?" Adam asked. Shalimar, Joshua, Brennan, and Jesse were in there too.
"Suez works for the GSA. The building and guards was the headquarters," she explained.
"Are you sure? Why would Eckhart raise awareness of New Mutants like this? It doesn't make any sense."
"I know, but I'm positive," Emma said. "The feelings I got, once I figured it out everything fell in place."
"Well what should we do?" Jesse asked. "Anything we do everyone will see."
"That's the beauty of politics," Shalimar said. "Don't worry guys, I've got a plan."

"Today, candidate Miguel Suez dropped out of the race. Last night he was arrested for drugs at his home. The police will not give any information at this time but we'll keep you posted."
Emma turned off the TV. "Well looks like everything turned out okay," she said.
"Yeah," Shalimar said. "So what are you going to do, Joshua?"
"Adam gave me a new name, new record, new country. I'm going back to England to finish school," he said.
"So we don't have to worry about you?" Brennan asked.
"Next time a weird looking guy comes up to me, I'll run," Joshua said. "Well, my flight leaves in three hours, so I have to go."
Joshua walked off, leaving them standing around the stairs. Adam came in, holding up a few papers. "Hey guys, listen to this. Straight from the Sci-fi Reporter. 'On Monday, two flight attendants boarded a plane and used super human abilities to fight off six attackers. One used a blanket which is going to be included in next years Sci-Fi convention. They disappeared after the plane landed in England. Were they just karate masters who happened to be on the right flight at the right time, or aliens from outer space? We'll keep you posted.'"
"Do you think the world will ever be ready for mutants?" Shalimar asked.
"Not for a while," Adam answered. "But that’s why we're here, right? To make sure nobody ever finds out."
They walked up the stairs to watch Jesse and Brennan play another round of Alien Busters.
